About us

The Telecommunications Authority of the Faroe Islands (Fjarskiftiseftirlitið) is an independent regulatory body as established under the Telecommunications Act number 72, 22. May 2015.

The Faroe Islands are registered with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) as a territorial administration under Denmark.

Fjarskiftiseftirlitið is the regulatory authority for radio and telecommunications, including national frequency management and allocation in accordance with ITU frameworks, as well as the radio-based maritime distress and safety services in and around the Faroe Islands.

ITU-related frequency planning, frequency coordination and international cooperation are conducted in collaboration with Denmark as the ITU Member State.

The Telecommunication Act provides the legal framework for the telecommunications sector. The Authority is mandated to promote an efficient and innovative market for electronic communications networks and services for the benefit of end-users.

The Radio Monitoring and Radio Interference functions are administered by the Authority.

Telecommunication to and from the Faroe Islands is primarily connected by two subsea fiber optic cable systems, ensuring resilient national and international connectivity.

The telecommunications grid and subsea cable infrastructure in the Faroe Islands are managed by publicly owned enterprises.
